About Plainpurse
Plainpurse explains everyday money decisions in plain English, and gives you tools to run your own numbers — without an account, a sales call, or a sign-up form.
What we do, and what we don’t
We publish general guides and free calculators covering budgeting, saving, debt, investing, tax, pensions and insurance. We don’t give personalised financial advice, and we’re not authorised or regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. For advice that takes your specific circumstances into account, speak to a regulated financial adviser — MoneyHelper, the free, government-backed guidance service, is a good place to start.
Editorial policy
Guides on this site explain widely-accepted, general personal finance concepts, cross-checked against official UK sources such as gov.uk, HMRC, MoneyHelper, the FCA, The Pensions Regulator and the FSCS where relevant.
- No specific recommendations. We explain concepts and mechanics; we don’t name or rank specific banks, brokers, lenders or insurers as “best”.
- Numbers and thresholds change. Tax bands, allowances and contribution limits are reviewed periodically, so guides point to official current figures rather than fixed numbers that would go stale.
- Calculators are illustrative. Every tool states its assumptions, such as a constant growth rate, directly on the page.
- Corrections. Guides are reviewed and corrected when an error is identified.
- Review cadence. Each guide shows a “last reviewed” date. We aim to revisit guides at least once a year, sooner if something material changes.
